Scottish Government publishes Super Sponsor Scheme and Homes for Ukraine: Guidance for Local Authorities

The Scottish Government has published its Super Sponsor Scheme and Homes for Ukraine: Guidance for Local Authorities earlier this week. This outlined the approach the government will take, and local authorities, working in partnership, will have a critical role to play in both schemes.

Initially, people arriving from Ukraine will be met and taken to Welcome Hubs in hotels near entry points to the country to allow for assessment of the need for appropriate housing and support. A matching scheme drawing on COSLA’s experience will connect people to a specific local authority and home, with resettlement support to help integrate people into their local areas.

Local authorities and housing associations are already working together to identify suitable properties for longer-term permanent housing. The extent to which housing associations can help will depend on size and available stock, but we know that housing associations are keen to support refugee arrivals into the country.

We have had a number of queries from members about the UK Homes for Ukraine, and tenants wishing to assist will need their landlord’s permission. In addition, they can expect to undergo an enhanced disclosure check for safeguarding purposes and a visit to ensure that their property is suitable.

Further guidance is likely as the scheme develops, and we start to see people arriving in the country.
