Following our previous roundtable session and FAQ document on the implications of the planned shutdown of the Radio Teleswitch Service, Energy UK have now issued the following statement:

Energy UK can confirm that the necessary contractual arrangements have now been finalised to extend the operation of the Radio Teleswitching (RTS) arrangements until at least 31st March 2024.

Radio Teleswitching is used by electricity suppliers to enable certain types of meter to record consumption at different tariff rates. It’s typically used in premises that use electricity for heating and supplying hot water – through storage heaters, panel heaters and immersion heaters. Around 1m consumers across GB have electricity meters that rely on the RTS arrangements in their homes and businesses. Smart meters are the natural upgrade to the ageing Radio Teleswitching technology, and will ensure that households and businesses are still able to access flexible electricity tariffs once the Radio Teleswitching service ends.

Energy UK is now urging all consumers with Radio Teleswitched meters currently installed to look out for communications from your electricity supplier on upgrading to a smart meter and book your installation as soon as it is available.

SFHA will continue to work alongside Energy UK to ensure the transition for restricted meters is properly communicated and managed. If you have any further questions in the meantime, please contact cdove@sfha.co.uk
