SFHA Annual Conference Speaker Interview: Bill Scott

Posted Friday 13th May by Admin User

Ahead of our Annual Conference, taking place on 14 and 15 June at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow, we asked our speakers what they'll be discussing during their session and what role social housing can play in reducing poverty. Bill Scott, Chair at the Poverty and Inequality Commission shared his thoughts with us.

What are you discussing at the conference and why is this an important issue?

Progress towards the child poverty reduction targets, the new child poverty delivery plan and the contribution that social housing can make in reducing child poverty.

What more should be done to tackle poverty and inequality, particularly given the current cost of living crisis?

The UK Government needs to take action to reduce energy costs and both the Scottish and UK Governments need to provide the poorest households with increased, targeted  financial support.

How can we achieve the Scottish Government’s vision of a fairer Scotland as we continue to recover from the pandemic?

We need to restructure our economy to provide greater rewards for those currently in low paid work and in particular the caring professions.  We need to enable the most excluded groups in our society to benefit from the growth of the green economy and we need to redistribute wealth to reduce inequalities and poverty.
